Teachings and Practice of the 17 Vajrapani

Vajrapani ("The one who bears the Vajra") is, in Vajrayana, the embodiment of the enlightened power (or might) of all Buddhas. He appears in many peaceful, semi-wrathful and wrathful manifestations. In Buddhist symbolism, however, his wrathful form does not mean hatred or aggression. It stands for the determined protection of the teachings and the overcoming of inner obstacles such as:

  • Fear
  • Attachment
  • Anger
  • Pride
  • Ignorance
    negative habits

The flames symbolize the burning of these obstacles, not the harming of beings.

In some Tibetan traditions, especially within the Sakya and Kagyu lineages or individual terma cycles of the Nyingma, there are collections of several Vajrapani sadhanas. Some of these cycles comprise exactly 17 manifestations or 17 practices.

The event can be attended on site or online via Zoom.
